Frančeska je bila udata za Ričarda Džonson i s njim je živela na usamljenoj farmi u okrugu Medison, u Ajovi. Nakon njene smrti, njena deca Karolina i Majkl otkrivaju da je u svom dnevniku Frančeska opisala ljubav s izvesnim fotografom Robertom Kinkejdom.
Veza je trajala samo četiri dana a sve se dogodilo u leto 1965. godine, dok su muž i deca bili na velikom sajmu. Kinkejd je svojim malim kamionom zalutao tražeći mostove okruga Madison koje je trebalo da snimi. Zaustavio se pred Frančeskinom kućom i ona mu je pokazala put.
Frančeska je nekada bila učiteljica, ali je zbog podizanja dece napustila školu i ostala domaćica čiji se snovi nisu ostvarili. Robertu su putovanja po svetu onemogućila normalan porodični život. Sprijateljili su se, a odmah i zaljubili jedno u drugo. Bio je to početak ljubavne priče koja je trajala tek nekoliko dana i živela u njihovim uspomenama više od 20 godina.
Film je ekranizacija istoimenog autobiografskog romana Roberta Džejmsa Volera. Ova priča o čežnji i razumevanju, o ljubavi tako snažnoj da može zauvek da promeni nečiji život, jedna je od najpopularnijih knjiga u novijeg doba - skoro tri godine bila na listi najprodavanijih knjiga Njujork tajmsa.
